Most of my childhood was spent in my parents' Chinese restaurant in southeast Los Angeles. I have many fond memories of watching my dad cook, my mom helping me with my homework by the register and taking naps on large bags of rice. Their cooking is something that will always comfort me. When I moved to Humboldt 3 ½ years ago, the hardest thing was not having access to my parents’ cooking. It made me really sad, so I decided to learn how to make my parents’ recipes and show my love and appreciation for their food through my art. Before I decided to make this piece, I was really craving my dad’s baos(steamed buns) so I created them out of porcelain and the steamer out of sterling silver. Making it in this miniature size reflects how precious and meaningful my parent’s cooking is to me.
