Polonia Odahara Novack
“I create forms and combine objects to talk about hard truths.”
- Polonia Odahara Novack
Polonia Odahara Novack is sansei, a third generation Japanese American ceramic artist. Born in Santa Monica, she is the granddaughter of Japanese immigrants and daughter of a Japanese American mother. Seven of her immediate family members were incarcerated in an American concentration camp during WWII. Having grown up in a postmodern Southern California landscape, within a crucible of surf and car culture, she remains drawn to social justice and environmental issues which continue to inform her work. Her clay-focused studies range from working with indigenous potters in San Marcos Tlapazola, Oaxaca, Mexico, to MN NICE, an advanced program of study at Northern Clay Center, Minneapolis, MN. She currently lives and works in Saint Paul, MN.
