The calm and centeredness that clay makes space for is a beautiful and essential part of who I am and how I approach clay. Paulus Berensohn led a guided meditation while pinching clay that I participated in while attending Haystack Mountain School of Craft. This was the beginning of “The Gratitude Bowl Project”. I create large pillar like bowls that have opening for viewers to slip a piece of paper through with their response to the question “What are you grateful for?” The responses are uploaded to a site with a QR code that viewers can use to see other responses. “The Gratitude Bowl Project” is meant to help the viewer reflect on their own lives and celebrate what they are grateful for. The Mayo Clinic recently stated that a gratitude practice can improve sleep, mood and immunity and can decrease depression, anxiety, difficulties with chronic pain and risk of disease. This idea of mindfulness, and clay being a material that can help us maintain healthy emotional and mental health is the guiding force of my work.
