Gadiel Rivera Herrera

My creative work originates at the spark of emotion that comes from the detailed observation of my surroundings. While combining and interpreting its forms and functions, I am leaving the traces of those experiences through clay, nurturing from an ancestral present. The artwork arises from memory, objects and every day experiences. I start from the history, mythology and spirituality of Africa and the Caribbean. My personal interpretation of events from the past and present is integrated with the experience of being black in Puerto Rico today. The symbology of the Caribbean Sea and sky, its people, flora and fauna also motivate the compelling stories I want to tell. Improvisation facilitates the details to emerge, the oneiric to be interpreted and take shape as a transformative encounter. My creative process focusses on details, meticulousness, and the repetitive process which becomes a mantra.
