Annie Boyer
My work explores the concept of a magical forest where fairy tale creatures exist in tandem with the human world. The creatures and plant life that I create are fantastic and otherworldly. They can be cute and appealing or have a dark side. My work aims to invoke a sense of wonder as the viewer inadvertently stumbles into the realm of these magical beings.
My work is primarily ceramic, but I also include other elements such as fiber materials and found objects. I have been exploring the incorporation of mixed media with the goal of synthesizing the wide variety of interests and skills that I have had throughout my career. I particularly enjoy combining the soft surfaces of fiber with the hard surfaces of clay. I work with a variety of clays and firing methods including low fire, stoneware and porcelain clays and fire in an electric kiln. I each piece I aspire to incorporate many surface textures to create visual interest.
