Clay is an experiential teacher. Each ceramic object is a metaphor for endless cycles of creation and destruction, infinite stages of becoming as it passes through contingent iterations of itself. I consider each piece to be a miniature representation of life. A successful pot requires present moment awareness and the pursuit of balance. I often draw spontaneous mandalas on miniature jars using reductive and additive surface techniques while the clay is pliable. I seek to capture equilibrium between unpremeditated exploration and repetition. I am drawn to making jars because of the integrated duality they embody (e.g. internal/external, above/below, open/closed, hidden/seen). Each piece is infused with an internal logic and harmony so that alone it represents a tiny universe composed of both opposition and wholeness.
