August Brosnahan

I create sculptures that blend figurative and animalistic elements, embodying a quiet, thoughtful presence. These creatures, which I call gnomes, stand or sit in silence, designed to inhabit their placement—whether it be the home or the woods. The inspiration for my gnomes stems from a feeling of being observed in the spaces I occupy. As a child, this sensation initially went hand-in-hand with fear, especially during walks in my local park. But with time, this feeling transformed into a source of calm and expectations. Through my work, I give a face to that mysterious presence, bringing it into a tangible form that I can observe. While I cannot speak with my gnomes, sculpting them allows me to bridge the gap between the imagined and the real.
