Jennifer Evans Arbo

By embracing imperfections, we can see nostalgic beauty amongst a cruel world. I strive to divulge what is underneath, carve away the layers of the superfice; to reveal the raw emotions that have been ingrained in us to survive. My art looks at the perspective of the empath, the one that wears their heart on their sleeve, who feels too deeply and cares too much. The layers of clay that have been extracted from a ceramic piece reveal the true nature of the earthen material. The years it has endured, the storms, the paths that have been taken above it before it met my hands. This history within transforms into the stories of now, and the energy of the future it will experience in the hands of the beholder. My ceramic art is fueled by the need for tactile stimulation and creativity. I have learned to be intuitive with the medium, pushing its boundaries, yet following its lead. This method has led me to make emotion derived sculpture and beautifully shaped functional ceramics. Three-dimensional art includes touch, the experience that someone has with one of my ceramic pieces includes the shapes that you feel, the texture of the glaze, the harsh and the smooth edges of each piece. I want someone to enjoy holding a piece of my pottery just as much as looking at it. I strive to continue reflecting on my craft, asking it questions and not always finding the answers. But the true personal value of the work is the process and connecting with something deeper than you or I. The connection that we have with clay is more common than one may think; we both have a strength beyond our known depths, but a vulnerability that is revealed and a capacity that is continuously tested.
