Amy Hosterman

I’m fascinated by rocks, dirt, history, and process, but most of all I’m obsessed with clay - by the journey it takes through geologic time, writing its own history in layers of sediment while we record our relationship to it, through fire. I harvest wild clays and temper minerals across the country, and hand-process them for use in my studio practice. I’m studying the material itself, our ironic attempts to control it, and our place in its vast history. I make small sculpture and illustrated pottery depicting scenarios that use humor to comment on our absurd relationships with the environment, our awkward relationships with each other, and our ironic attempts to organize the natural world.
