My sculptural work is an exploration of human nature and societal expectations through figurative subjects. I start with a simple form that interests me, such as a person or animal. I initially sculpt to become familiar with the physicality of the object and also to discover what it means to me. I pay special attention to features that I find myself resisting, or that nag at my subconscious: physical elements like hair, expectations of what makes a beautiful figure, or the fact that we recoil at some creatures, but not others. I can’t help wondering why we react to things the way we do—whether it is a matter of being human or whether it is a matter of socially constructed attitude. I question these instinctive judgments, and resist the feeling of being boxed in by them. The process of iterating through multiple versions of the sculpture helps me find my way around these feelings by making changes until something new emerges that surprises me and invokes a new feeling of delight.
