For me, making pottery started out as a personal experiment in “can I do that?”, and quickly became a significant source of wonder and joy in my life, providing me with an opportunity to cultivate a previously hidden, creative part of myself. While taking my first wheel-throwing class in November of 2022, I found that when sitting behind a wheel, I was able to completely release my brain from thinking, analyzing and processing other people’s life experiences, skills that I use daily in my career as a psychotherapist, and instead, tap into the calming, mindful and free flowing world of crafting beautiful objects from a ball of clay. Embracing the maximalist in me, I love to use porcelain as a blank canvas, which I then fill with color using underglazes and glazes and a variety of techniques, such as inlay, carving, slip trailing and painting. I enjoy making pieces that are functional, as well as decorative. In celebrating and sharing my Ukrainian heritage, I am exploring the use of traditional Ukrainian art forms of Petrykivka, colorful floral paintings, and Pysanky, Easter eggs typically decorated using beeswax, to bring my wheel-thrown ceramic pieces to life.
