Jiayue Chai

Portraiture is one of the longest-standing artistic traditions, rooted in the artist’s attempt to render the essence of her subject. This pursuit, however, raises the question: where does that essence reside? Through an absurdist lens of abstraction, the forms I create explore my relationships with the people and the world around me. I employ implied narrative, varied surfaces, and absurd details to engage the viewer. By deliberately withholding resolution, the work invites projection and interpretation, encouraging the viewer to remain in a state of uncertainty. Meaning is produced not as a fixed conclusion, but as an experiential process shaped by attention, discomfort, and individual perception. Absurdity emerges in the disjuncture between expectation and reality, or in the collision of opposing ideas, and it is within this encounter that humor is born. Humor becomes a way of confronting these moments without resolving them, allowing tension and suffering to exist alongside laughter.
