I am interested in the relationship between intuition and discovery. I allow myself to work in a thoughtful yet spontaneous manner, celebrating the material characteristics of clay. I believe in the importance of utility and the ways it can convey ideas of culture, place, and self. Utility presents an opportunity for me to consider how the objects I make play a role in the lives of others. In my studio practice I strive to create ceramic objects that fulfill their intended purpose, while existing as thoughtful and considered entities. I am inspired by both historical and contemporary objects of utility. I find it fascinating how material dictates the way in which an artist approaches their process. I encourage myself to record my interaction with my material by leaving marks made by my tools and hands, celebrating the dialogue between myself and my medium. The choice to fire my work in atmospheric kilns further encourages this record between clay, fire, and maker; leaving evidence of each piece’s journey from start to finish. I strive to create objects that present this relationship in physical form to their audience.
