Hannah May

I’m drawn to familiar forms that bring me comfort. I consider the concept of security often in my life and in my work. Ownership of objects can bring a feeling of stability and remind us of personal, family, and cultural history. Objects also help connect what is physically real with what we experience as individuals. Just like photographs or written documentation, objects represent experiences. In my recent work I use chairs as symbols of rest, safety, and of the life cycle of material objects. Patterns on the surface of my work are abstract pieces of the chairs that reference these ideas of building security, piecing together our histories, and the wasted life in objects we discard.
