Mark Kobasz

My work is inspired by minimalism, and the animism of indigenous art and architecture. Recently, the suburban house shapes of my own childhood have become a strong focus. These repetitive, familiar forms have subtle differences that engage me. Throughout my 40 years of artmaking, glass in combination with wood, metal, and other materials has been a constant. Glass in all its forms intrigues me, and for the last several years I have worked with sand cast glass, kiln-worked, etched, and printed glass in combination with other materials. My current project, called “Memory Objects,” explores the territory of the past, as it manifests in architectural and other iconic images. I made hundreds of items using a sand-cast process, scissors, hammers, rolling pins, shoes, keys, toys, etc. I am using a variety of materials and techniques for creating these pieces, which range from installations to very small objects. The architectural thread continues, with suburban houses as a central element.
