My work is largely informed by material. With a background in glass and metalsmithing, I often find my voice through my interpretations and expressions of these traditional crafts. With a consideration for these material’s long-standing histories, I explore how modern technologies impact both the ways in which we create as well as how we value different methods of creation.
Thus far, my work has approached a broad range of topics as I begin to explore my personal identity as an artist and maker. I have recently begun to focus on the implicit value of materials themselves and how their histories can allow me to better understand the relationships between people and objects. Both glass and metal have been used throughout history to show power and wealth as well as the highest advancements in both technology and craft. At the same time these materials have fostered an intimate relationship with humans through everyday mundane interactions. I attempt to use my understanding of materials processes and histories to question the value systems we assign to material in a modern world.
