In our ever-changing capitalist society, the intricate, ornate, brightly colored designs of the past are often thrown out, knocked over, and burned down in favor of bland homogeny. This aesthetic is an apathetic weaponization of minimalism that creates a sense of soulless emptiness. My work incorporates themes of maximalism and absurdism, critiquing the mass-produced designs of late-stage capitalism. These themes come together through the lens of both functional pottery and figurative sculpture, utilizing humor and bright colors to grapple with the uncertainty of the world we live in. My characters personalities come together in a playful way, reminiscent of the escapism I found throughout my life in the world of cartoons. I draw inspiration from the lively characters in animation, which then reflect my various experiences as a queer, neurodivergent human. In a world where capitalism demands the grind and sacrificing of our personhood in exchange for fast, cheap and easy, this work asks you to stop, play, observe, and bring whimsy back into our lives.
