As a sculptor turned glassblower, I am excited by the potential and challenges of sculpting with glass at a miniature scale — How small and thin can I work? What are the limits of this material? My current work is a study of insects made of glass, in which I focus on realism and accuracy. The duality of the strength and fragility of glass allows me to explore the permanence and impermanence of recreating nature out of this material. Insects especially flies, ants, spiders, and bees interest me because they are symbolic of human phobias, and by materializing them in glass I play with the emotions they evoke. They also allow me to explore the context of how they are presented or displayed. A big inspiration are the 19th century glass artists Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka because of their mastery of creating delicate biological models.
