Heather Monsen

I was once asked what was the one thing that made me happy. My answer was “making things”. This could be anything really - sewing, baking, babies or just a mess…but mostly art. Making art brings joy to my life.
I look at my art as a way to connect with my loved ones. I can be inspired by old photographs, objects and stories of my family. From that inspiration, I create a work of art that I can leave behind for my children. The idea of one generation inspiring another is very important to me.

I believe that the line between art and craft is blurred. I make functional work as well as sculptural pieces and many times blur the line so the sculpture becomes functional. All of my work is inspired by my family, my home and my surroundings. This includes my daily walks in the woods and trips to the beach. Nature is apparent in a lot of my work as is humor and whimsy. I draw patterns and color schemes from the world around me for many of my Utilitarian pieces. My sculptural work usually comes from a funny memory or a thought that makes me laugh. I love the idea that I can give an object a gestural form and have it come to life and develop a personality of its own.

We all need humor and love in our lives. Surround yourself with meaningful, beautiful things that make you laugh or smile when you look at them and your world will be even better. When I was young, it was my dream to build my own house and everything in it, from the furniture to the place settings at the table. I have a very long way to go, but I am surrounded by beautiful, meaningful things that enrich my world everyday and for that I am thankful.
