Artist Statement: Steve Hilton
As a geologist and a clay artist, I have developed an appreciation for the anomalies in the many forms of life, clay, rock, and soil covering the Earth. I am intrigued by the way the Earth’s surface is changed by both erosional and depositional means.
I am currently thinking about these iterations as I work. Since these fragmented shapes are repeatedly subdivided into parts, each a copy of the whole, I'm compelled to continue to use self-similarity and texture which allows me to interpret nature for the viewer and myself: with both of us seeing the world differently after viewing my work.
Because of social and environmental concerns, I am committed to not firing any of my ephemeral work, but occasionally fire a teapot, and other smaller objects.
