Jamie Bates Slone

My studio practice explores identity and the mental landscape, using scale, vignette, composition, and surface to challenge societal expectations. Engaging with themes of mental health, sexuality, and gender, my work fosters a dialogue that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. I have recently begun investigating the intersection of psychology, witchcraft, and mythology, drawing from Jungian psychology, ancient symbols, and archetypes. As an AFAB person, I examine how these systems have historically defined and oppressed bodies like mine—casting femininity as mystical, dangerous, or bound to suffering. Through sculpture, I reclaim these narratives, using self-alchemy to transform trauma and imposed identity into something tangible, expressive, and autonomous. My practice is an excavation of anxieties, insights, and shifting mental states. Each piece serves as a dynamic self-portrait, confronting ideas once silenced by societal constructs. In doing so, my work becomes a space for catharsis, empowerment, and transformation—rewriting both personal and collective histories.
