Jessica Phillips

My work centers on the vessel as both form and metaphor. To be human is to be a vessel: to hold, conceal, reveal, and transform what we carry. Rooted in clay and recently expanding into printmaking and painting, my practice explores the tension between intention and surrender. Through atmospheric firings and glaze combinations, I am interested in the point where my control gives way to the force of the material. This tension also reflects my movement from analysis toward making, shaped by my background in technology and the humanities. Across media, I return to themes of family, memory, cultural inheritance, ambition, grief, and dwelling. I am drawn to objects and images that hold what is difficult to say directly, and to making as a way of giving form to what we carry.
