“Profane French Word and Houses” In keeping with my Profane Word series this time around I have borrowed from the French and have found that I quite like how this swear word looks and sounds when spoken aloud. ‘Merde’. The piece is porcelain glazed with fleurs-de-lis and gold luster around the rim which helps elevate the piece and makes something rude fancy. In 2020, I wanted to do single word pieces that would succinctly describe the social, political, and general mood of the country. I’m still working with this concept and exploring the idea further with various iterations, using A.S.L. and other languages. Stay tuned! I have also continued with my House As A Home series. I’ve added stand alone trees to go along with the houses symbolizing putting down roots, nature, and caring for our planet. The raku house does the opposite by showing that it is possible to go through the worse of things (fire) but still come out on the other side in one piece - and with the marks to prove it. With the next election looming large on the horizon, my work speaks to these unsteady times and expresses what’s important: establishing roots and the importance of ecology and hope.
