Val Shamma

I make objects that recreate the basic functionality and aesthetics of organic and manufactured mechanisms.. The work evokes the dualities of bodily and machine mechanisms through rendering them in clay. Their simultaneous fragility, strength, ephemerality, and permanence are highlighted through the lens of a material that can remain unscathed for centuries or shatter if handled carelessly. The objects convey a specific satisfaction when the viewer becomes the user by engaging with the piece physically. Latches, chains, joints, and hinges grind and chime as they are set into motion.
