Thomas Foerster

Eliot Foerster is a ceramic artist living in Philadelphia. Originally trained as a sculptor, Eliot puts a strong emphasis on form and alteration. His work is gas or woodfired with simple glazes that enhance the form of the vessel without distracting from it. A sculptor at heart, Eliot is constantly looking to incorporate hand-building elements while maintaining functionality. Alteration and distortion of thrown forms play heavily into Eliot’s work. Rims are cut to make them uneven, coils are added to give dimension, and round forms are warped to add interest. On larger vessels, after the thrown form has been distorted, sculpted feet are added. These elements are all part of Eliot’s exploration into the overlap between functional and sculptural work.
