Austin Coudriet
My ceramic works are an intuitive reflection of my daily experiences. I experiment constantly, pulling ideas from sketchbooks, inspiration boards, modern design, architecture and my own state of being. I utilize a wide variety of techniques to make sculptural vessels and functional sculptures.
As a child I would draw with my father, an architect. I was always fascinated by the way he built with lines. His drawings were loose but intentional. Lines exceeded their boundaries yet were contained by the image they formed. It was this freedom within structure that shaped the way sketch and think about my works.
I am especially interested in exploring the conversation between soft amorphous forms and rigid linear components, both aesthetically and as means to express the way I view myself in structured constructs. Time, society, class and social normalities to name a few. These works help me solidify fleeting experiences and feelings, which would otherwise get lost in my quick-changing and evolving studio practice. Each piece performs as a journal entry, categorizing a period of my life.
