Margarita Paz-Pedro

My art work in ceramics is multifaceted. I am the combination of a ceramicist, potter, community arts organizer, arts educator and mother. My work is contained in many types of clays, and crosses many categories. I draw my ideas from how time, place and culture intersect with my Mexican/American, Laguna Pueblo and Santa Clara Pueblo background. It is many parts to the whole. I create from who I am, where I am from and what I am interested in. I see my work in clay as an interwoven, life-long relationship. The vastness of ceramics makes it difficult to choose one clay or way of creating in clay. I currently make large scale ceramic tile murals collaboratively with an organization that I co-lead and co-founded, and with other organizations. I also create wheel thrown functional porcelain. My functional work incorporates carved designs, photo transfers, underglaze designs and glaze combinations with a focus on identity and experiences. There are many ways to get to the end product, and I find the process is just integral as the outcome. These ways of making drive me to be better, visually and as a human.
