Sujata Jagota

I work with clay to make functional and decorative pieces. In my work I try to create an aesthetic quality inspired by nature. Centering my day around building these clay forms offers me an opportunity to experience this aesthetic quality, inner poise, and joy. I aspire to express in my work the immediacy and beauty found in nature – both plant and animal life, through a sculptural interpretation of form, texture, and color. My prior training in chemistry and materials science informs and enhances my engagement with clays and glazes, particularly in developing new glaze formulations or modulating existing ones to discover new colors and finishes. I usually work with stoneware clay and fire my pieces at cone 6 in an electric kiln and also use techniques like raku, saggar, naked raku, obvara, for non-functional pieces. Recently, I have also been working with earthenware clay and glazes. Some examples of my work can be seen at: www.sujagota.wix/sj-ceramics In September 2018 I was awarded the first prize in Craft at the Riverside Festival of Arts and Crafts at Easton PA. In 2021, one of my pieces was accepted to the Small Favors exhibition at the Clay Studio
