Nicholas Diaz

Born in Asia and raised in South America, I lived in Africa and Europe before returning to the US in 2019. I find my inspiration from that background and experiences, connecting multicultural references through the universal language of art. Clay represents my new beginnings, when anything is possible (until not), and taught me many lessons I still translate into my personal life - the impermanence of the liminal states, the fleeting hopes of certainty, the beauty of the process as it is. Creating miniature pieces speaks to that approach - one factor (size, in this case) transforms the entirety of the subject. Every facet connected to it is hence altered - the easy becomes impossible, the hard negligible. The object no longer stands, it whispers. Ultimately a miniature artwork is a work in defiance, daring to be other, while showing that it can be the same. These pieces use such techniques as sgraffito, luster and saggar firing.
