As a registered voter for the past forty seven years, I diligently made my way to the polls armed with enough knowledge to make what I hoped was an educated choice and hope for the best. In today’s political environment, it’s impossible to ignore the corruption and incompetence of the current administration. The series on which I am currently working are slab constructed buildings that explain the narrative of how society has ruined nature; how the patriarchy has regressed women’s rights and of course, the petulance of our current president. My work is a satirical exploration of power, entitlement, and accountability. Our Dear Leader is a figure perpetually on the brink of a tantrum, yet somehow evading the consequences that many believe he deserves. These two pieces invite viewers to reflect on the societal norms that allow such figures to continue to thrive without consequences. In my adaptation, he is finally imprisoned. However, his environment is adorned according to his gaudy standards, a golden padded cell and surrounded by his precious bitcoins. These tiny structures are both a critique and a call to action, urging a reevaluation of who we allow to lead and the standards to which they are held. They are a commentary on the state of our democracy and the responsibilities we bear as citizens to demand more from those in power.
