My work is influenced by androids found in science fiction. I reference science fiction to create cyborgs mimicking the gestures found in antiquity and renaissance artwork. Through this exploration, I express the strain of mental illness and the means in which it affects my perception on relationships and reality. These qualities merge from an obsession with human behavior and the human condition. The purpose of medication for mental health is to stabilize a chemical imbalance in the brain. When induced by medication, a part of myself is repressed and what is left is only functionality. I connect this sensation to the automaton’s lack of individual feelings and responsiveness. The representation of the cyborg’s augmentation connects physical and emotional strength. This illuminates the idea of achieving enlightenment through overcoming the stigma surrounding mental illness.
