The work I create is reflective of typologies of the vessel form and the curiosity of floral attraction. Flowers are clever and alluring; their beauty has transfixed entire cultures and species. The vessel is a powerful form with a notion of containment that is both metaphorical and physical. I make hand-built vessel sculptures of porcelain and terracotta paper clay in an attempt to ground concepts of desire, beauty and intimacy. I build with press-molded flower forms or dried flowers soaked in slip so that the adornment is built into the structure of the piece rather than applied: surface and form are equally considered. Furthermore, I respond to the negative space formed between clay parts and add or subtract to counter-play space and mass. Sculptural voids play with perception, or to seduce the viewer to look closer. The work allows me to direct a rhythm between object, body and space that is flexible and fluid.
