Jae Won Lee

I pay attention to the natural surroundings. Plants and everyday objects naturally existing around me have formed the subject matter in my artwork. Plant elements in a poetic way with drawing, inlaying, or transferring printed images. I explore literal, semiabstract, and abstract depiction of plant elements, especially with seed forms for their potential as a propagative plant structure of germination to produce a new plant. Moreover, I reflect on my origin, identity, and life as an immigrant in the US. Through lyrical and delicate artwork of porcelain and mixed-media, I convey my thoughts and longings for my motherland, Language, what I lost being uprooted, and what I gained from my adopted soil of America. This visual journey investigates the divisions and unification of nature, culture, and society as well as the acculturation of Eastern ideas in a Western environment.
