My pots are totems of my existence. With the capacity to communicate conceptual meaning and to serve as objects of utility, pottery not only dances in the notorious space between art and craft, it embodies the human spirit. Pottery is a universally understood language and I would argue that in the modern world, so too are the Simpsons. My current body of work uses references and symbols adopted from the animated series to articulate my invented mythology and experiences using the pottery form. I use a playful mashup of abstracted elements from the Simpsons, the zigzag for example, in my formal pottery explorations and manifest my own idols of worship with the more “on the nose” figurative pots. Just as ancient makers mythologized and translated the natural world around them through abstraction and symbolism in objects, I translate my own reality using the pottery form to reflect on the beauty and absurdity of life.
