Studio Touya

Hitomi and Takuro Shibata are Japanese natives who lived, worked and trained in Shigaraki which is one of the oldest pottery villages in Japan. They are Studio Touya. They came to the United States in 2001 to learn American ceramics. They have worked in several institutions in the US. They now live in Seagrove, NC which is the biggest potters community in the United States. Takuro is the director of STARworks Ceramics and researches NC wild clays. Hitomi works at their home studio where they build Japanese style wood kiln and maintain their pottery business. Studio Touya makes ceramic work using wild clays and wood kiln to fire their work. Hitomi and Takuro have attended and run countless conferences, workshops and symposiums to talk about their clay stories. They participate in national and international ceramic art exhibitions and events which allows them to see interesting ceramic people, cultures and materials.
