Melissa Clout

I use the wild pigments of Arkansas as my color palette. I refer to a wild pigment as a material, usually a rock or mineral, that I encounter unexpectedly in nature. These rocks and minerals are not pure: impurities occur during the natural process of their formation. These impurities remain intact throughout the refinement process, providing unique characteristics to the final pigments. I use these wild pigments to color the ceramic glazes I use in my practice. My method of making celebrates the raw, wild colors found in Arkansas. By using only local colorants, I am emphasizing a need to connect to the earth and encourage a personal understanding of the materials we use everyday. My forms mimic pots and vessels, respresting the deliberate collection of something with the purpose to use and share later. This theoretical collection parallels my deliberate collection of the raw pigments, but instead of water or grain, my vessels are filled with the intent to share the colors of the earth.
