Coral reefs are worlds unto themselves, full of contradictions. A riot of colors and diversity sits side by side with a quiet peacefulness and soft motion. Camouflaged critters find homes in the coral. I am a diver, long fascinated by a world I visit, observe, interact with, yet necessarily remain apart from. I have played with the variables open to a ceramicist—clay bodies, texture, size, color, glazing techniques— to attempt to capture some of the beauty and mystery of the underwater world, in what I call “clay reefs.” “Small favors” invites clay artists to similarly use size to alter other kinds of sculptures.
