My work in clay is inspired by pattern and texture with an ongoing exploration of design, function and style. I am interested in vessels which can decorate a living space and can become part of daily use. Utilizing a canvas of thinly rolled slabs, I make use of handmade stamps, found objects and added decoration. Each clay slab is cut and folded into a functional form and finished with attention to details. Each piece comes alive as I design and create it, usually with any preplanning. Variation on a theme are created where one idea leads to another as each subsequent piece is based on ideas and enhancements from the previous one. I work primarily in mid-range stoneware for its strength and durability. It’s willingness to be transformed both in form and texture makes it a perfect medium for me to develop and create strong pieces. My work is both functional and decorative, useful and beautiful. While there is no essential difference between functional and artistic, I aspire to make pieces which are well crafted, aesthetically pleasing with the hope they will reside in someone’s home to be enjoyed and used.
