Molly Anne Bishop

As an illustrator, I use both humor and functional ceramics to create intimacy and build connection with my audience. My pots serve as a functional canvas for sharing my world and the things I find funny, strange, or both. Building on the ancient Greek tradition of earthenware vessels as documents of daily life, I use sgraffito and underglaze to make highly illustrative ceramic pottery about my day-to-day life and the humor I find within it. My style of illustration has been honed through a 15-year practice of keeping diary-sketchbooks, where I can explore ideas in private personal pages. These drawings combine illustration and text to point out the funny things about the mundanity of life. They often make their way onto my ceramics. Everything I make comes from a place of wanting to relate and to feel less alone. I have always believed that ceramic art is uniquely positioned to build intimacy, whether it be through a favorite coffee cup or a commemorative plate to document a special occasion. Humor only deepens that connection. Finding the relatable and absurd in the every-day and sharing that through functional hand-built pottery is my primary focus as an artist.
