My approach to ceramics is in the spirit of experimentation! “What can I do with this clay?” or “What would happen if I ____?” are questions I ask myself before, during and after a project looking toward the next one. My first clay home, Clay on Main in Oley, PA allowed me freedom to investigate many of those questions. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to set up a garage home studio as work space complete with a kiln to continue the ‘what if’ exploration. I’m able to fire work that is sized large or is maybe a bit too experimental to add risk-free to a community kiln load. The work included here is porcelain paper clay, pinched and impressed with a bisque stamp. The brushed on glaze is an ash type made with sieved clay from under the family homestead located near Hawk Mt., ash from equisetum growing in the marshy area behind the house, and a frit. It is based on a suggested recipe, experimental, from Robin Hopper’s “The Ceramic Spectrum.”
