Mary OMalley

I am a cancer doctor, researcher, and ceramic resistance artist. As a physician-scientist, I have witnessed the healing powers of modern medicine. As a ceramic artist, I have witnessed the same for art. As fascism, censorship, and hate have metastasized throughout the country, clay has become my freedom. Freedom to create unencumbered. Freedom to speak unafraid (actually, I’m doing this scared). And freedom to resist. Through handbuilt resistance art made in the San Francisco Bay Area, I write truths into stone(ware) so they cannot be erased. My “Written in Stone” resistance frame collection shares messages of community, solidarity, and dissent through language and form. Frames are unassuming domestic objects in our homes that showcase our most cherished memories. By subverting the common frame form to create signs of resistance that are simultaneously iconic, indexical, and symbolic, I bring dissent into the everyday. These mini resistance frames are handbuilt and altered to embody the stamped message. Through text and texture, I use my art and relative privilege to support human rights, inclusion, and liberty and justice for all, not some.
