Years spent working as a field archaeologist heavily informs my work. Excavating past lives and figuring out the puzzle is slightly less opaque when ceramics are uncovered, offering clues to spatial, temporal, and functional use of a site. There’s nothing like the magic of brushing away 2,000-year-old dirt and finding a glistening pot sherd, broken edges sharp as the day it was smashed, slipped design bright and clear. The conditions under which ceramics were created between the past and present have changed quite drastically; in my practice, I make functional wares with a strong nod to the technical processes and themes borrowed from antiquity, intentionally working within the permanent material of ceramic, existing to remain over time.
