Julie Moon
My practice is motivated by material and process. The universality and tactile qualities of working with clay offers a refreshing contrast to our screen-dominated lives.
The surface of my forms, in both sculpture and vessel, is a canvas for expressing individualism and diversity. My inspiration for both form and surface tends to draw from an accessible visual language that resonates with broad audiences. Details of course add specificity, yet also rely on abstraction or enough lack of detail where images cannot be traced. My work and practice pays homage to the Pattern and Decoration movement of the 70’s and 80’s, embracing the residual effects of an inclusive spirit associated with counterculture movement prior.
This sculpture, is part of an ongoing series of clay figures. This particular work is inspired by ancient and iconic Cycladic figures as well as vibrant and amophorous camouflage patterns.
