Screen Printing on Clay with Ian PetrieFull, Waitlist Available

Learn to make your very own underglaze transfers! In this one day workshop, participants will learn every step of the ceramic screenprint transfer process. Beginning with image preparation, students will learn how to process drawings or photographs into a silkscreen-ready halftone image which can be exposed onto a screen. The workshop will then follow a hands-on demonstration of basic screenprinting techniques and materials. Finally, students will be guided through the method of transferring ceramic screenprints onto wet clay forms, both slab-built and wheel-thrown. Students are encouraged to submit an image or two that will be printed and transferred during the class.

Students are welcome (but not required) to bring a few pieces of greenware to practice this transfer technique. Greenware work should be on the wetter side of leather hard, and must be made with clay rated for cone 6 firing temperatures. Greenware slabs and cylinders will also be prepared in advance and provided for partiipants to use. Workshop fees includes clay and mateirals, as well as bisque and glaze firings for up to 4 pieces per participant.

Bio:

Originally from Minnesota's St. Croix valley, Ian M Petrie grew up surrounded by utilitarian pottery. During his studies at the University of Minnesota (BFA, 2013) and two emerging artist residency programs (Northern Clay Center, Worcester Center for Crafts) he learned how to use screenprinting to apply his illustrations onto ceramic slab-built forms. His work can be found across the country in art galleries, east coast craft shows, and probably a lot of kitchen cabinets. In 2025 Ian wrote and illustrated his first graphic novel, "Chrysalid". Today, Ian lives in Philadelphia, some days wondering why a dinner plate cracked and other days sighing at a blank piece of paper.
