3D Printing: Planter & Saucers

In this one-day introductory workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of  clay 3D printing by creating simple planters and saucers. Using basic extrusion commands in Rhinoceros 3D and TinkerCAD, participants will digitally design planters under 6 inches in height and print them onto pre-prepared slab bases, with or without drainage holes. Throughout the day, essential machine operations will be covered, including clay preparation, packing and loading the extruder, and an overview of clay 3D printer mechanisms. To allow for multiple prints within the workshop time frame, a 5mm nozzle will be used for primary forms, while a 3mm nozzle will be available for printing flat decorative elements. Participants are encouraged to bring simple 2D sketches for collaborative design with the instructor, or pre-thrown or handbuilt leather-hard pieces to which 3D-printed decorative elements can be added, allowing for a hybrid digital and hand-built approach. The workshop will utilize 182 Clay. Finished pieces will be dried and bisque fired after the workshop.
