3D Scanning & Clay 3D Printing

This workshop introduces participants to 3D scanning and clay 3D printing, offering an exciting entry point into digital fabrication for ceramic artists. The workshop will begin with a lecture covering the concepts and creative potential of 3D scanning and clay 3D printing, particularly how these tools are used in contemporary art practices. Then participants will be guided through the process of using a 3D scanning app available in the studio to digitize 3–5 objects they bring to the workshop, ranging from found objects or your previously made clay works. After scanning, students will learn basic machine operations—from machine preparation to packing and loading clay — while printing their final pieces, which must be under 7 inches tall.

Important Notes:

Participants will be contacted via email one week before the workshop with guidance on the types of objects best suited for 3D scanning.

The class will use 182 clay for printing.
