Creating Characters: Seated Animal Sculptures with Tyree Dworak

Join us for this fun, one day hands on workshop exploring techniques for animal sculptures with artist Tyree Dworak!

In this mini workshop, students will learn the skills to create a seated animal. From creating a hollow form to adding texture and color, Tyree will demonstrate basic construction techniques as well as a few tricks she has developed along the way.

In the morning, students will sculpt a small seated mammal.  Through a brief practice period, they will make mistakes and learn about how position cannot only change the story their animal tells, but may also increase or decrease the life a sculpture.During the second half of the day, Tyree will demonstrate how to add slip to create fur and add underglazes for color and interest.

Students should bring reference photos and an open heart ready to play.  This workshop will teach important skills that can be used over and over for hand-building sculpture.

Please contact Education@theclaystudio.org or 215-925-3453 x 106 if you have any questions. Visit the Workshop Registration Info & Policies page for our cancellation policy.

Artist Statement:

Creating has always been an outlet or balm for me. When I am creating, I get out of my head. I play and fail and try again. Ceramics became my medium of choice years ago. Through learning, failure, and persistence, I've been able to push myself to create both figurative and animal sculptures that share stories. As I pinch, push and apply texture, a story emerges. It is though these stories I get to connect with people. I love telling all sorts of stories in my work about anxiety, joy, humor or pain. I love how this connects with others.
