Soda Kiln- Community Firing: February 18th

*Community Firings are currently only available to students and associated artists to The Clay Studio

Join us for our Community Soda Firing on February 18th

All work must be bisque fired, glazed and ready to load by 10am on Tuesday,February 18th.

The cost for a share in the community soda firing is $75.00 for 1 cubic foot of space. There is a maximum of 2 shares per person. This share is equivalent to a 12” x 12” x 12” box (or one 12” D x 24” W x 6” H shelf). When determining the amount to bring, keep in mind work should not be nested in your box, and you will need to account for wadding and the space around the pieces in the kiln.

Participants must use the studio-provided glazes, slips, and wadding. Provided Supplies include: Flashing slips, Cone 6 Glazes, wax, and wadding.  Work must be bisque fired before the firing, and clay must be rated for cone 6 temperatures or higher. All work must be no larger than 12” tall, or 12” Wide

Participants need to be available to glaze and wad their work, and a studio tech will be available during the designated glazing times to answer questions about wadding and glazing. A link to sign up for a glazing time slot will go out one week prior to the designated loading date.

Please do not bring:

  • Beads or small pieces less than 2”
  • Bowls and plates larger than 8” wide—Limit one plate per share as plates have a large, shallow footprint, and our shelves are limited.
  • Avoid bringing thin pieces that will be prone to warping

Loading will begin at 10 am on the scheduled loading day (Tuesday, February 18th) and all work must be glazed, wadded, and ready to load by this date. All work should be signed or stamped, and participants are responsible for collecting their own work during the pick-up times (kiln to be unloaded on Friday, February 21st, and an email regarding pick up times will follow). The studio techs are responsible for loading, firing, and unloading all soda kiln work.

Please notify us if you do not have enough work to fill your share at least 1 week before the scheduled kiln loading date. The Clay Studio cannot guarantee that all work will be loaded into the kiln; however, we will take all steps necessary to ensure fairness in the kiln-loading process.

Cancellations more than 2 weeks in advance will result in a credit, minus a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be provided for cancellations less than 2 weeks prior to the load date and no refunds will be provided if participants do not bring enough work to fill their share

If any additional space is available an email will be sent out to participants approximately one week prior to the scheduled firing.

Please contact Corrine@theclaystudio.org if you have any questions.
