FULL, Now Waitlisted - Exploring NerikomiFull, Waitlist Available

In this workshop, you focus on learning about the basics of Nerikomi, a traditional Japanese layering technique that creates agate or patterned surfaces through hand building. We will go over how to achieve both patterned and linear surfaces while also learning about molds, dying clay methods, the basic tools needed to continue this practice, and making pots of your own.

Workshop fees include 25 lbs of clay (5 lbs of dark brown, light brown, white, and two-color clays) and bisque and glaze firings for up to 4 pieces per participant.

Artist Bio:

Mackenzie Pikaart is a clay artist whose practice explores relationships between her past self and present memory, form and erosion, texture and color. Her work takes shape in functional objects for the home, where each object holds these relationships. By using somewhat playful shapes and colors, Pikaart creates a mirage where the viewer may only focus on the immediate attraction, but with deeper investigation, the voice of loneliness speaks loudly.

Pikaart is inspired by architecture, poetry, instrumental music, and rainy days. In all of these, the tension of togetherness and being alone creates beauty in the in-between. Pikaart searches her memory for times of peace, self-love, and others' acceptance and, through that search, reveals uneasy moments, times she wishes to forget, and sexual trauma, but also moments of joy, love, and a depth of personal understanding.

Her works are meant for daily use, a reminder of living through all that life is.

Mackenzie received her BFA in Crafts/ Ceramics from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she currently lives and works.
