17-SP12 Testing Terracotta

This class is an earthenware journey that introduces low-fire glaze calculation and encourage students to create their own test tiles to help make informed choices for adding color and texture. You look at ancient Greek examples of terra sigillata, explore how cultures around the world have traditionally used low-fire surfaces and understand contemporary ceramic practices with terracotta. Each student formulates their own final assignment from their test tiles and creates a research project from a piece in a museum or from art history. There are two optional field trips. The first to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to discover the Greek and Roman section to see Black and Red Figure techniques and do sketches. The second to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to explore the Pennsylvania Redwares. (No class 5/29)

In this seminar-style course, you'll be guided through some of the essential ways that you can deepen your relationship with your own work. Together, we explore how each student's particular practice relates to a broader context of historical and contemporary ceramics. A variety of resources will be introduced, ranging from artist interviews, videos and exhibition catalogs, to gallery websites and museum collections. This discussion-based course is intended for students who have an ongoing studio practice. Due to the highly individualized nature of this seminar, class enrollment is limited to 8 students. (This class meets bi-weekly and does not include access to making work in the studio unless you are registered for a 10-week class.)
